I started “The Dead Fish Series” as a photo project for a Facebook Group in 2012. The inspiration came from work by Michael Fish Fisher and Vicente Ramos, both exceptional abstract artists. I would go to the Kahala Whole Foods when I lived in Hawaii. The Whole Foods Market has a beautiful fish counter, with fresh catch on ice. I would sneak around with an iPhone when no one was looking, and take a few snaps. I got caught one day and showed the Fishmonger my finished work on my phone. The photos and art pieces got a surprisingly good reception. There was a woman who would arrange the fish for me. It was a lot of fun. The whole environment changed when the pandemic hit. Hawaii shut down for a while and when Whole Foods reopened, the fish cases were hidden behind a plexiglass panel. The series became quite popular and I was known as the “Fish Guy” for a time.
